Internet Security Threats...are you vulnerable
Caught on Camera!
In the Spotlight - Product Feature
Common Sense Defence
1. Give every user an anti-virus program that is simple to use, fast, and trustworthy. Add it to their menu and have them scan whenever they are nervous about a virus.
2. Prevent theft by spraying the back of monitors, keyboard bottoms and the tops and bottoms of all system units with a colour chosen by your company, it won’t affect their functionality, but it does lower resale value of the item making them less tempting to a thief.

Security Threats...are you vulnerable
With each passing day, not only is more and more business conducted via the internet, but email is fast becoming the preferred means of communication between
organisations.
As a result of this increased usage and understanding of this new communication technology, there is also an awakening to the security issues that may result when connecting to the internet.
While most people are aware that the problem exists, they are unsure exactly what the threats are. Others believe that a firewall will protect them...and they are deluding themselves! While firewalls are useful in some instances, it is essential that you are aware of the various areas of vulnerability in your system.
Attacks to your system can come from:
Password Guessing Easily guessable passwords or default passwords can defeat nearly any system and are the most common means by which systems are penetrated. A proper firewall should establish the
non-guessability of all passwords used in the system it is protecting. It should also limit the number of login attempts.
Hackers - They have a number of tools at their disposal which include; ‘spamming’ - blocking up your system, ‘spoofing’- using your IP address, ‘pinging’ - they send a packet out into the network just asking what is at the other end, a successful response means they can then see which ports are open through a port scan.
Virus’s attached to mail - If the mail system can be entered by an attacker who can forge a message, then they will not have a problem attaching a program to the mail. These programs may seek to merely capture passwords or they can contain viruses, these types of viruses are called ‘trojans’.
So how can you protect your system? Firstly, install anti-virus software that allows you to scan every floppy disk, every file on your file servers, every e-mail message and every web page you visit...NO EXCEPTIONS! Secondly, firewall security systems are a high tech equivalent to a bouncer at every door. They are equipped to recognise spoofing, pings and port scans.

Caught
on Camera!
A safe was located in a cellar. This fact was unknown to suppliers and clients but a large number of employees knew it. They also know from where they could ‘borrow’ the key if they wished to put something inside.
When it was found that a large amount of money was missing, management decided to have a camera put in place to identify anyone taking more money from the safe and thereby set at rest lingering suspicions about the previous loss. So many people had access to the key and they all felt themselves to be under suspicion.
After a short time an employee was seen on the video tape taking money from the safe. He had no authorisation to do so. When he was interviewed he admitted that he was also responsible for the first theft.
Imagine the surprise of the management when, a few days later, more money went missing from the safe. Fortunately the camera had not been removed. However, this person had been rather more careful. He had a plastic bag over his head. Not clever enough! He was identified by his clothing, build, walk and the way he swung his arms and moved his head.
